Preschool Screening

Early Childhood

MARESA's preschool screening program helps families in Marquette and Alger counties identify whether their child is developing on track before entering kindergarten. Early identification of potential delays gives children the best chance at receiving timely support and starting school ready to learn.

Preschool screening is recommended for ALL children that turn 3 or 4 by September 1.

What Is Preschool Screening?

Preschool screening is a brief, free assessment designed to check key areas of your child's development. It is not a diagnostic evaluation but rather a snapshot that helps determine whether further assessment or early intervention services may be beneficial. Screenings are conducted by trained professionals in a welcoming, child-friendly environment.

What Is Assessed

During a screening, your child will be observed and gently assessed in several developmental areas including speech and language skills, fine and gross motor development, cognitive and pre-academic skills, vision, and hearing. The entire process typically takes about an hour and is designed to feel like play for your child.

When and Where

Screenings are held at various locations throughout Marquette and Alger counties during the fall and spring. Specific dates, times, and locations are announced each year through local schools and MARESA communications — see Preschool Screening by District for registration contacts, or call (906) 226-5100.

How to Register and What to Bring

Families can register by contacting MARESA or their local school district. On the day of screening, please bring your child's birth certificate, immunization records, and any previous developmental or medical records you may have. There is no cost to participate.
