Marquette-Alger Technical Middle College

The Marquette-Alger Technical Middle College (MATMC) is a public, tuition-free, early middle college program that enables students from throughout Marquette and Alger Counties to earn a high school diploma, a significant number of college credits, or a technical certificate from the Michigan Early Middle College Association through enrollment at Northern Michigan University or Bay College at no cost to the students or their families. To take advantage of this incredible opportunity, students must:

  • Commit to a five-year program of study as opposed to the typical four-year path through high school.
  • Pursue either a Career and Technical Education (vocational) or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) postsecondary certificate/degree program.
  • Apply for acceptance and interview with MATMC staff during their sophomore year of high school.

The MATMC will target students who have traditionally been underserved, especially those who are less engaged and at-risk of dropping out of high school, economically disadvantaged, and first-generation college students. It will, however, be open to all qualified students.

This educational option is the result of extraordinary collaboration between local school districts, the Marquette-Alger Regional Education Agency, Northern Michigan University, Bay College, and local communities. It reflects the belief that it truly "takes a village" to provide students with the best possible education.

The 2024 Marquette-Alger Technical Middle College Application is due Friday, March 15. Apply today!
