School Social Work

Mental Health

MARESA's school social workers play a vital role in supporting the social, emotional, and behavioral well-being of students throughout Marquette and Alger counties. They bridge the gap between home, school, and community to help students overcome barriers to learning and achieve academic success.

Role of School Social Workers

School social workers provide consultation, collaboration, counseling/intervention, and evaluation services for students, families, and school staff. They are knowledgeable about the ways in which students' social, emotional, and behavioral functioning impact learning, development, mental health, and school success. Their expertise in mental health, child development, and family systems makes them an essential resource within the school community.

Services Offered

Our school social workers deliver a range of services including individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, behavioral and social-emotional assessment, and family consultation. They participate as members of Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams, helping to develop plans that address students' social-emotional needs alongside their academic goals. Social workers also connect families with community resources such as housing assistance, food programs, and mental health services.

Who We Serve

Services are available to students in all Marquette and Alger county school districts who are experiencing challenges that affect their ability to learn. This includes students dealing with anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, family instability, or behavioral concerns. Social workers serve students of all ages, from early elementary through high school.

Referral Process

Teachers, parents, administrators, or students themselves can initiate a referral for school social work services. Referrals are typically made through the building principal or student support team. Once a referral is received, the social worker will collaborate with the family and school staff to determine the most appropriate level of support.
