Family Engagement

When families are actively involved in their children's literacy development — reading together, discussing books, supporting learning at home — students build stronger foundations for academic success.

3rd Grade Reading Law

In 2016, the Michigan Legislature passed a law requiring schools to identify learners struggling with reading and writing and provide additional help. In 2023, new legislation removed the retention portion of the law — good news backed by research showing retention negatively impacts student achievement.

Schools are still responsible for tracking interventions and recording progress for students who need additional support to meet necessary benchmarks.

Individualized Reading Improvement Plans

All students below benchmark on reading assessments need a diagnostic screener and an IRIP with goals, interventions, and progress monitoring. Parents receive a copy along with At-Home Reading Plans. Use our template — make a copy and customize for your school.

Districts can create their own IRIPs or use the MARESA template.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in Literacy

“Children have the right to read texts that mirror their experiences and languages, provide windows into the lives of others, and open doors into our diverse world. These rights apply to all children — not just children with parents who understand the necessity or know where to find such books, but every child, in every classroom, every day.”

— International Literacy Association, Children's Rights to Read

Creating classroom libraries of culturally responsive texts is crucial. The resources below support the implementation of more culturally responsive instructional strategies and the integration of diverse texts across your curriculum.
