Assessment

During the 2014-15 school year, Michigan rolled out a new assessment program called Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress, or M-STEP. The M-STEP is a 21st Century test given primarily online each spring and is designed to gauge how well students are mastering state standards. These standards, developed for educators by educators, broadly outline what students should know and be able to do in order to be prepared to enter the workplace, career education training, and college.

MME

The Michigan Merit Examination (MME) assesses students in grade 11 and eligible students in grade 12 based on Michigan high school standards. It is administered each spring, and consists of three components:

Students in grade 9 and 10 also take the PSAT 8/9 (grade 9 only) and PSAT 10 as part of high school state assessments.

NWEA

The Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA), established in 1977 continues to be a leader in the field of educational assessment. It developed its first computer adaptive assessment in 1985 and its flagship assessment -- the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) -- were unveiled in 2000.  MAP continues to be updated as curriculum standards are modified and technology advances.

Measures of Academic Progress-MAP: All 13 local school districts within the Marquette-Alger RESA service area are using the NWEA Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) Assessments.

  • Measures of Academic Progress create a personalized assessment experience by adapting to each student's learning level.

  • The adaptive nature of these online assessments allow for precise measurement of student growth and progress on the learning continuum.

  • Essential information about what each student knows and is ready to learn is available for use within 24 hours.

  • Unlike traditional assessments, MAP is administered three times per year to effectively monitor student learning and growth.

  • Because it is not restricted to only grade level items, it can properly target needs and strengths that may appear both above and below the student's current grade.
