Elementary Principals' Meetings

Elementary principals from across Marquette and Alger Counties generally meet on the third Wednesday of the month during the school year at 9:30 am at Marquette-Alger RESA. This roundtable provides an opportunity for the Principals to share information and ask questions of each other concerning all aspects of their jobs. MARESA staff also use this format to disseminate information from MARESA, the Michigan Department of Education, MASSP, and other professional organizations.

 

Middle and High School Principals' Roundtable

High school and middle school principals meet on the second Friday of the month during the school year at 12:30 pm at Marquette-Alger RESA. This roundtable provides an opportunity for the principals to share information and ask questions of each other concerning all aspects of their jobs. MARESA staff also use this format to disseminate information from MARESA, the Michigan Department of Education, MASSP, and other professional organizations.

 

New Teacher Training

MARESA seeks to actively support its constituent districts in complying with Section 1526 of the School Code by offering a multi-day new teacher professional learning series entitled: Teacher Induction and Mentoring Essentials Series (TIMES). Section 1526 is the section of law that deals with new teachers and that states, in addition to assigning each new teacher one or more mentor(s), that:

  • During the first three-year period, the teacher shall also receive intensive professional development induction into teaching, based on a professional development plan that is consistent with the requirements of Section 3a of article II of Act No. 4 of the Public Acts of the Extra Session of 1937, being Section 38.83a of the Michigan Compiled Laws, including classroom management and instructional delivery. 
  • During the three-year period, the intensive professional development induction into teaching shall consist of at least 15 days of professional development, the experiencing of effective practices in university-linked professional development schools, and regional seminars conducted by master teachers and other mentors.
     

Administrators' Academy

This annual event, originating in August of 2010, brings together practicing school superintendents and administrators to explore current issues in education administration and leadership. Topics include: legislative and legal updates and issues, finance and funding, and school improvement, assessment, and accountability. The academy occurs during the first week of August and is typically two days in length. The Academy is co-sponsored by the Upper Peninsula Center for Educational Development (UPCED), MASA–Region 1, MAISA, Northern Michigan University, and Bay College.
